The Yale Symphony Orchestra is honored to present the world premiere of a new work by renown composer Eric Nathan, continuing the series of commissioned works in celebration of YSO’s 50th anniversary and the 10th anniversary of Musical Director Toshiyuki Shimada. Nathan, a 2014 John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellow, 2013 Rome Prize Fellow at the American Academy in Rome, is a graduate of Yale College and YSO alumnus, Class of 2006. This premiere precedes Gustav Mahler’s monumental Symphony No. 6, heralded by Alban Berg as “the only sixth, despite the [Beethoven’s] Pastoral”. Of a symphony at once completely enveloping and deeply incisive, Mahler’s beloved wife Alma wrote that “not one of his works came as directly from his inmost heart as this”.
